Hate hate hate. So if my attempt to initialize an object might throw an exception, I have to catch it. But then if I put the initialization in a "try" block and try to use said object later, it "might not have been initialized." So how do I make sure it has been initialized? Grr.

Why do I procrastinate so much? Why? I just end up with busy days like this in the end. It's just so easy to push something unpleasant out of my mind, though.

I have forgiven Curtis, the squid undercooker. He's been nice and made good food since then.

Had my first dinner back on campus tonight. Calamari pasta. The squid was NOT done, still partly clear and floppy. Yuck. I am going to make the pasta guy cook things longer next time if it looks like they aren't done.

So I went to NYC and Connecticut, got back, and finally have my computer connected to the internet again. Life is getting busy here and I don't even have a job. I mean, I have to organize all the stuff I left here when I went to school, I go dancing 4 nights a week, ride my bike, hang out with my friends til 3 or 4 am... isn't life hard :-) ok, you guys with jobs who read this are free to be mad at me.

I really really wanted my belly button pierced. Wanted badly enough to actually be willing to have someone stick a needle in me. Unfortunately, unlike my little sister I didn't have the guts to do it myself (yes, she pierced her own nose) and by the time I turned 18 belly button piercings were really trendy. Everybody and her sister had one, so I didn't want it anymore.
The point of the story is: pine for something long enough and either you will get it or not want it anymore. That's part of my philosophy. I just try to make the pining part a happy daydreamy thing rather than an "I can't have it so I think I'm just going to sit in a corner and mope" thing.

Harlem here I come!
06.10.03 (8:12 pm) [edit]
|
Very very excited about the Harlem Jazz Dance Festival. There's going to be lots of dancing plus I get to see NYC for the first time. I checked out the bus and subway systems today and it looks like I'll be able to get from the airport to where I'm staying, and from where I'm staying to Dance Manhattan and the HJDF events and the train station all on direct lines. Yippee!

Say one day you're hiking in the woods and an alien jumps out in front of you. It says, "I can take you up to my spaceship and show you things that will change your life, but you have to promise never to tell anyone here on earth." Would you do it?
I try to experience as much as I can of life, but I hate secrets. Can you really have meaningful relationships with anyone in your life if you have to lie to them?

Governments should have savings, just like people or businesses. Most telling sentance from this article: "Oregon would have entered the 2001 recession with a reserve fund of $1.14 billion, according to an analysis by the Legislative Revenue Office." http://www.registerguard.com/news/2003/06/03/a1.kicker.0603.html" title="http://www.registerguard.com/news/2003/06/03/a1.kicker.0603.html" target="_blank"http://www.registerguard.com/...

Never underestimate the power of the right situation to turn you into a shy 13 year old again. Ahh, the days of dances where you'd stand along the side of the gym, quivering in mortal fear and desperate desire of the opposite sex...

Went dancing, had some good dances with Alex and Mike. So many leads are coming home to Seattle for the summer just when I'm about to leave! I might have to make more trips up than just the Seattle exchange. A westie girl has been coming to the Lindy dances and every time I see her it reminds me that I need to go do West Coast Swing or I'll start losing the skills. This summer I'm sure I will, the dancers may not be as great back home but I actually have friends. I've been here 9 months and when I go to a WCS dance I still don't have a table to sit at -- I'm shy and I don't want to feel that I'm barging in on peoples' social circles.

I'm also seriously considering going to Vancouver this weekend. I really shouldn't, but if I finish the stupid paper I will. Ahh, so so tempting... I think that's going to be on my tombstone. "Would have lived longer if she had some self-control"

Safari actually is pretty cool
05.26.03 (12:06 am) [edit]
Warning -- geeky topic. So I long ago ditched IE and Netscape as primary browsers and have been using Chimera/Camino for a few months. Today I decided to finally give Safari a try.
Good stuff: Safari is actually pretty cool. Like Camino it has tabbed browsing, essential on OS X since it lacks a window switching key. My favorite feature so far is that the favorites bar can include folder trees as well as individual bookmarks, meaning I no longer actually have to use the bookmark menu very often. Having your folders right out there instead of buried in a menu makes everything that much quicker.
Bad stuff: There are a few sites that show up strangely in Safari. A very few, like Quizilla, won't work for me at all. Also, Safari's windows are brushed metal (like iTunes). I'm sorry, but NO. iTunes is analagous to a real life CD player, so looking like an appliance makes sense. A browser is just another window on the desktop. What is the point of Apple's big push for a unified aqua interface if some apps happen to have the brushed metal appearance for no reason? If they're going to break their theme like this they might as well have built in and appearance switcher so I could change the look of my windows to whatever I like. Luckily, I already had the demetallifizer from Unsanity (http://www.unsanity.com/) which is a haxie to turn off the brushed metal appearance.
I have to go dancing now, back later with more "deep thoughts"...
